Transferring files between Android and Windows may soon become significantly simpler

Microsoft is enhancing the mobile compatibility of Windows 11. The tech company recently introduced the ability to use your phone as a webcam and to manage Android files wirelessly. Now, they are advancing this with a new Phone Link update that streamlines the pairing and sharing process between Windows and both Android and iOS devices.

With the latest update, users can connect a new Android or iOS device directly from a side panel in the Start menu, making it unnecessary to search for the Phone Link app. This method is faster and more user-friendly.

Getting started is straightforward: just open the Start menu, select your device (either Android or iPhone) from the side panel, and follow the instructions. Once linked, you can manage your phone directly from the Start menu.

For iPhone users, the Android phone panel is now accessible as well. The new side panel provides iPhone users with quick access to notifications, battery status, recent contacts, and connection information. While Android users enjoy these benefits, they also have additional features like listening to voice messages, viewing photos, and resuming tasks where they left off. Currently, this update is available to Windows Insiders, but it is expected to roll out to everyone in future updates.

The new feature for both Android and iOS users includes the ability to share files straight from the Start menu. There’s a convenient ‘Send files’ button at the bottom of the side panel that allows you to quickly transfer items from your PC to your Android or iPhone.

According to Microsoft, you will need Windows 11 Build 4805 or later (Beta Channel) or Build 26120.3000 and above (Dev Channel) to access this feature (source: Android Authority). Additionally, you must have Phone Link version 1.24121.30.0 or newer and Bluetooth LE support.

You can manage mobile integration by navigating to Settings > Personalization > Start, where you can also disable the side panel if preferred. This update marks significant progress in connecting different operating systems, allowing you to manage both your computer and mobile features from a single location.
