The Red-Hot Foldable OnePlus Open Apex Edition Will Be Available From Next Week.
Many of us have been keenly waiting for the release of the OnePlus Open 2, even though the OnePlus Open still happens to be one of the best foldable phones out there. Following recent leaks, OnePlus has now seemingly confirmed its 2025 release date for the Open 2. It’s bringing a new version to try to keep interest in the original going.
With an official launch date of August 7, the OnePlus Open Apex Edition is essentially a cosmetic update. The most noticeable update is the new “Crimson Shadow” colorway, which OnePlus says was inspired by the classic Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor Red Edition camera. It is a sophisticated red color with a faux leather feel. I’m up for the Deadpool feeling that the new colorway gives off, especially when paired with the phone’s huge black camera island.
OnePlus is hinting at “enhanced storage” and “AI image editing features” on the Apex Edition, in addition to the device’s striking appearance. The former may be implying that the Apex Edition will come with greater RAM and/or storage capacity than the OnePlus Open’s already large 16GB/512GB option. The AI picture editing capabilities perhaps hint at the functionality that will soon be available on the regular OnePlus Open as well as the future OxygenOS enhancements.
It’s interesting to note that the official product website states that the OnePlus Open standard gets “4 years of OS upgrades,” whereas the Apex Edition gets “3 years.” This could mean that the original OnePlus Open shipped with Android 13 (which has since been updated to Android 14), while the Apex Edition will ship with Android 14 pre-installed.
We won’t know the exact cost until the formal launch on August 7. However, there’s a chance the Apex Edition will be on sale for the OnePlus Open’s original $1,799 price as the standard model ($1,699.99 at Amazon) is now selling for most of its listed price.
For a while, interest in the original OnePlus Open model will undoubtedly be piqued again by this updated version. We’re still keeping our fingers crossed, though, that the OnePlus Open 2 won’t be too far off. Meanwhile, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will launch in a few days if you’re itching for a new foldable choice this summer.
